We Become What We Think About

Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. - Proverbs 4:23

Bad hair days. Waking up on the wrong side of the bed. Sunday scaries. Manic Mondays. Mid-week slumps.

Whatever you call a bad day, we’ve all had them. I’m the world’s worst at letting my emotions and thoughts get the best of me. When I feel off, it almost feels natural to sink deep into that abyss of sadness, anxiety, and hopelessness

And while I love clinging to verse in Lamentations about how God’s mercies are new every morning, I’d almost use that as an excuse to label an off day as bad, and not look for a way to turn it around until I could wake up the next morning

Then I heard some pretty incredible science that gave me a new outlook. My friend and I drove two hours last night to hear Dr. Caroline Leaf speak about the neuroscience behind our minds. As a Christian, world-renowned author, and highly acclaimed scientist, Dr. Leaf dropped some incredible knowledge that I couldn’t wait to share with you in today’s Wheatful Wednesday

Every single second is a new opportunity to take control of our thoughts and bring them back to God. Every SECOND! And what we think turns into how we feel, and how we feel becomes the reality we choose. Fellow control freaks rejoice - WE ARE IN CONTROL OF SOMETHING: OUR ATTITUDES

In Philippians 4:8 we are told to think about things that are good. God wouldn’t instruct us to do something if He didn’t already have a way for us to accomplish it. We were not created to be slaves to our emotions; we are equipped to be in charge of our minds. AMEN

Let’s start our day in prayer

Let’s write in our gratitude journals like we mean it

Let’s blast good music that lifts our spirits

Let’s call or text our friends and share joyful affirmations

Let’s remember that our Lord created our brilliant minds with purpose and the power to continually come back to Him

Challenge: Anytime you have a negative thought or emotion today, capture it and bring it to the Lord.

Mephibosheth, whose name means “shame”, was the son of Jonathon and the grandson of King Saul. He was a crippled man living in a dry wasteland called Lo-Debar which means “no pastures.” He was living there because when he was just 5 years old, news spread that his dad and granddad, Jonathan and Saul, were both killed. The remainder of Saul’s family could only assume that with the new King David coming into power, they would all be killed off next, so they fled in fear to become exiles and ene...

Compassion Triumphs Pity
Compassion Triumphs Pity

We can find biblical hope for this struggle when we consider the story of the Israelites’ exile in the Old Testament. The afflictions of the Israelites’ exile were two-fold. On one hand, they were exiled because of their own sin, and on the other hand, their burdens were increased because of the sin of the nations oppressing them. I am certain that if I were an exiled Israelite, I would have been grumbling and throwing pity parties the majority of the time. How does God respond to them? Throu...
