Tomorrow starts a new month, a new season. October.
What might God get the glory for if we all paused today and thought about what renewal in our lives could look like?
What’s one thing you can do to better protect your mind?
Maybe it’s putting your phone away in the evening hours, eliminating that instant access to your attention, so you can walk barefoot in the grass in your backyard, chase your kids around, or sit in your favorite chair uninterrupted as you read a good book.
Maybe it’s setting aside half a day each week when you don’t work, worry about the chores around the house, or try to make the day productive. You simply let the day unfold with a Sabbath heart posture.
Maybe it’s saying “yes” less often, but more intentionally.
What is one thing you could do beginning tomorrow that might give your life more space to breathe—to make room for the things that give you life, perspective, and rest?
Because I think sometimes our spiritual health is helped by making space.
Today is September 30th. In Ezekiel 1:1, the prophet describes receiving his first vision “in the thirtieth year.” While Scripture doesn’t give us a specific spiritual meaning for the number thirty, I love the idea of a marker—a moment in time that reminds us to stop, pay attention, and remember that God is at work.
Ezekiel's ministry would carry a profound message of both judgment and hope. He would proclaim God's promise to restore His people, cleanse them, give them a new heart and spirit, and ultimately dwell among them in His glory.
Sometimes we need a marker.
We need to mark a moment as holy—not because the moment itself has special power, but because sometimes our hearts need a clear point in time to stop, remember, and respond to what God is doing.
I believe that invitation is here today as we enter a new month.
You’re not too old, too young, too busy, or too messy to ask God to show you one thing you can begin doing today that will help you turn your attention toward Him.
God doesn't need a marker to move in our lives for the better, but I think sometimes I do.
Sometimes I need a clear moment to make a commitment to Him. A commitment not simply to be aware of my mess or my hope, but to respond—to make room for prayer, for His Word, for rest, for obedience, for perspective, and for trust.
The demands around us are tangible, pulling us in varying directions at a rapidly increasing pace. And distractions are everywhere. When the real responsibilities around us finally allow us to come up for air, we can often fill that space with worry. Replaying scenarios in our heads to get ahead. Trying to anticipate every possible outcome so we can be prepared.
Let’s not be too distracted to forget that scripture gives us another way. We can bring our anxieties to God. We can turn our attention toward what is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and worthy of praise. We can quiet our minds long enough to remember that God is not asking us to carry tomorrow today.
So what does making space need to look like for you? Where can you tangibly create a little more room to turn your mind and heart toward what is true?
Maybe it's shutting the door to unnecessary worry, putting your phone down, or maybe it's saying no. Maybe it's resting, opening your Bible before opening your notifications. Maybe it's simply sitting quietly before the Lord and remembering that you don't have to solve everything today.
We aren't making space because God is far away and needs an empty place to come fill. He is already here.
We make space because we need to notice Him. We make space to listen, to remember, to receive and to trust. To be renewed by what is true.
He is doing great things in His throne room, and through Christ, we are invited into His presence. So as October begins, perhaps you need a marker. Not a promise that this month will be easier or another list of things to accomplish. Just a moment to stop and say: God, show me where I need to make room for You. Show me what I need to release, what I need to receive, and what You are inviting me to trust You with.
Maybe that’s all we need. A little space. A little space to intentionally look to Him through our actions. Imagine the glory to be given to God in the month ahead if we simply make room to look to Him.
