Love is reciprocal.
To receive God’s love in full, we have to give it back to Him.
We love because God first loved us (1 John 4:19).
Our relationship of love with God requires faith. I’d like to think this faith is mostly challenged, not because of our disbelief in who God is but because of our worldly experience of love. Our relationship with love toward one another, the fleshly and broken kind of love, is failing and not perfect. We experience relationships with one another that are not perfect. We put our trust in one another knowing we will fail each other, but hoping it won’t happen anyways. When you experience love in this way, a way that is seen and physically felt, our minds can trip, projecting this experience on God when it was never part of His plan.
We must keep our eyes focused on God, in faith. His love is different. His love is perfect. It is not the same as anything we can experience on this side of heaven. If we think they are in any way the same, we do not know or trust God. That’s a tough truth to swallow. The upside? Our awareness that we can get confused should be a flashlight in the dark of our heart, pointing us to fix our eyes on Jesus because our souls know better, and that should bring us hope.
Love is reciprocal. Our devotion to seeking nearness to the Lord is a way of returning that love to Him. We desire to know Him more, and as a result we understand how to walk in hope. God has a great hope for our day today. One that is full of the promise that He is kind and good and generous. He is compassionate and He cares. His love is unfailing and constant. Always available to be our safety.
God, I pray you would surround us with awareness of what your love looks like today. Fill our hearts with hope that only comes from you. You are worthy of our trust and our faith. We love you. Amen.
