Christian women are talking more than ever about their longing to belong, often in quiet, safe spaces.
We want to be known, not just recognized.
We want to be understood, not by many but by a few.
We crave a small, close community.
We see that the kingdom of God has historically grown through small circles of deep belonging, as in Abraham’s family, Jesus’ disciples, the house churches in Acts, and the spiritual families in the epistles, to name a few. We have seen real soul transformations happen in close communities. It makes sense that our souls long for this kind of connection.
Belonging begins with being known by God. Psalm 67 begins with a request: “May God be gracious to us and bless us and make His face shine upon us.” This expression mirrors the blessing we find in Numbers 6, where God’s face shining means He grants His attention, favor, and presence. In other words, this request is a plea to be seen by God. If we pay close attention, with the most honest corners of our hearts, this resonates with our deep longing not simply to be acknowledged but to be truly known and held in someone’s attention. Before community appears in this psalm, there is the experience of being personally seen by God. This is the spiritual foundation of belonging.
Does the longing in your heart to be understood feel like something God placed there on purpose? As I reflect on this truth, it certainly feels like an honest longing to me.
When we receive the gift of belonging in Christ, we are able to extend that same belonging to others.
We may desire friendships that feel as effortless as an enjoyable coffee date, but the longing in our hearts goes deeper than easy chemistry. Deep belonging requires spiritual discernment, patience, and shared pursuit of God.
That may sound challenging, but there is encouragement in it. When we align our hearts with the Lord, He faithfully leads us toward the belonging we long for.
A few practical ways to move toward the belonging your heart longs for:
Open God’s Word
A moment in Scripture never goes to waste. God can do more with a single sentence from His Word than we can accomplish by crossing off every item on our to-do list. I’m often surprised by how quickly the Lord lifts my spirit when I simply open the Bible, even if it’s only for a few minutes.
Pray
Talk to the Lord and listen for the discernment the Holy Spirit provides.
Have open eyes to see people
Belonging grows through intentional relationships. Ask questions. Invite someone to coffee. Pursue conversations that move beyond the surface. Belonging happens when people turn toward God together.
Psalm 67 illustrates a beautiful progression of belonging as defined by God’s love and our deep desire to be known:
- God sees and blesses His people
- God’s people live together in the blessing of being seen
- The shared lives of God’s people lead the world to God
- Our desire to belong becomes witness; when we experience belonging, it is visible to others
Let’s also not miss this crucial element. Psalm 67 reminds us that God’s blessing does not stop with us. When we experience belonging in God and are known within His people, that belonging makes a loud statement to the world.
We long to belong because we were created to be known by God and then by His people.
