Your purpose is not just what you do. It is what happens to people through what you do.
I was sitting in my eye doctor’s front office, heart racing as I took deep breaths. It had been a full morning. A full weekend, really. I have been working toward something with everything in my heart and soul for over a year, and I had just gotten news that a conversation I thought was going one direction was actually going another.
I was surprised, but steady.
What could have been confusing actually felt clarifying. It reminded me that it is not just about what we do, but how we do it. What motivates our movement and what fuels our hope.
A change in plans creates space.
Space for the right plan.
Space for creativity.
Space for renewed obedience.
Later, still at the eye doctor, I was soothing my child, tired and overdue for a nap, while coming down from the adrenaline that comes with getting everyone out the door in the morning. I looked down at my phone and saw a text from a friend, a woman who attended our retreat last year and has been a constant source of encouragement with what feels like perfectly timed, God-ordained words.
Her message simply read:
“Word of encouragement for today…
Your purpose is not what you do. It is what happens to people when you do what you do.”
Because God so graciously gives us His Holy Spirit in our ordinary moments, His nearness is real. He meets each of us in personal and specific ways, and when we slow down enough to notice, we experience Him.
The nudge you feel to reach out to someone…
The perfectly timed encouragement…
The person God brings to mind in prayer…
When we pray for people, God moves through us.
I had thought about taking a week off of Wheatful Wednesday and even asked God, “If You have something to say, make it clear to me.” Within minutes, this moment from just the day before came flooding back.
We are reminded in Scripture:
“But be sure to fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you.”
1 Samuel 12:24
God’s redirection is not taking us away from our purpose. It is leading us deeper into it.
I have come to believe, and experience, that redirects in our lives can be some of the most beautiful opportunities to trust God. He is clear, and that is kind. We can move forward with hope, knowing He is at work through our obedience.
This life is not about predicting outcomes.
It is about faithfully walking in what God has asked of us.
Your purpose is not what you do. It is what happens to people through what you do.
So ask yourself:
Are you holding tightly to expected outcomes, or are you open to experiencing God through His redirection into something even better?
