Satisfaction not found in temporary contentments

Proverbs 22:11 “He who loves purity of heart, and whose speech is gracious, will have the king as his friend.”

Does anyone in your life come to mind when you read this scripture? For me, it’s my precious Mimi (grandmother). Her speech is pure,  life-giving, compassionate, gracious, generous, uplifting, and all things synonymous. Time with her leaves my heart full and longing to know Jesus more. I’ve honestly never heard her speak an ill word of anyone, which is truly a rarity.I firmly believe that the King considers her a friend. In every conversation she mentions Him. It’s oh-so-evident that He’s her confidant, her closest and most trusted companion. Could there be anything sweeter?

While I’m so often caught up in wondering what others think of me, what if I stopped to instead ponder what God thinks of me? Is my speech reflecting His character? Is my love motivated by selfish gain or purity of heart? These questions are so challenging.

The book of Proverbs is filled to the brim with wisdom and truth ~ ours for the taking. Earthly temptations are so fleeting, yet God has to constantly draw our attention back to Him. The only One who is everlasting. We want to be satisfied, but we give into temporary contentments. We long for purpose and we forget that our identity is the children of God. His heirs with a heavenly Kingdom to inherit. Friends, let’s camp out here. Immerse yourself in the truth. Renew your heart, mind, spirit. Seek friendship in the best friend that we could ever ask for. If we let the Holy Spirit guide our daily interactions, imagine where that could lead!

Compassion Triumphs Pity
Compassion Triumphs Pity

September 13, 2023

We can find biblical hope for this struggle when we consider the story of the Israelites’ exile in the Old Testament. The afflictions of the Israelites’ exile were two-fold. On one hand, they were exiled because of their own sin, and on the other hand, their burdens were increased because of the sin of the nations oppressing them. I am certain that if I were an exiled Israelite, I would have been grumbling and throwing pity parties the majority of the time. How does God respond to them? Throu...

As Christians, the biggest problem with unhealthy comparison is that it misplaces our passion for building the Kingdom of God onto building our own kingdoms of self. Comparison strips us of seeing what God has given us and called us to.
