We can use awareness of our nature to hide or to refine.
Here's what I mean.
You know those things about yourself that feel like part of your natural wiring?
Maybe you're aware that you're naturally defensive when you feel the need to protect yourself. Maybe when someone tells you what to do, you're automatically less inclined to do it, even when it's the right thing. Maybe you've noticed that you look for opportunities to disagree with people, or that you tend to withdraw instead of leaning into conversation when you're uncomfortable.
Whatever your natural wiring may be, it presents an opportunity to make a choice.
Will you hide behind it, using it as an excuse to stay the same? Or will you acknowledge it and allow Christ to refine it?
Self awareness is a gift, but it was never meant to stop at awareness. It is meant to lead us toward transformation. When we invite God into the places we know need shaping, He can do what only He can do and make us more like Him.
Think about one thing that comes naturally to you. Name it. Bring it before God and ask Him how He wants to use it for His glory. Ask Him if it's something to be strengthened, surrendered, redirected, or refined.
I can't help but wonder what God might do through this community if we all did that this week. If we each took an honest look at our inner workings and placed them in His hands. If we became willing to do the things that make us look more like Jesus, whatever that may be for each of us personally.
Romans 12:2 NIV "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is, His good, pleasing and perfect will."
Philippians 2:13 NIV "For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose."
Ephesians 2:10 NIV "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."
Micah 6:8 NIV "He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."
