Do you make a Christmas wish list every year? One of the first things I do when the Christmas season comes sparkling in (ie. Nov. 1st - Yes, I’m one of those) is to reach out to people to ask what is on their Christmas list.
What if what started with excitement begins to feel like confinement because the budget might not measure up? It’s easy to become overwhelmed with, will this be enough?
Sometimes the pressure of Christmas has us question our own level of contentment. It’s exciting to make a list about wishful things, but have you ever stopped to check in on your heart if you notice a shift from dream to need? Having dreams and desires aren’t bad things, but they do have the ability to become sinful if it’s all encompassing.
“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it…Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. ” 1 Timothy 6:6-7,9 (NIV)
How can we choose to be more content in the current?
“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5 (NIV)
“I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Philippines 4:11-13 (NIV)
Friends, as we embark on this holiday season, remember that this world is temporary. When our hearts have pure intent and our eyes are on Christ in Christmas, we have everything we could ever need. Let’s fight our earthly desires from becoming a deterrent from keeping our eyes on Christ, and find joy in contentment for what has already been given in the current.
