Bitter to Blessed

Bitter to Blessed
Teddy Rosevelt once said, “Comparison is the thief of joy”. In this Christmas Season, have you found comparison being the Grinch stealing that joy?

Maybe you didn’t send a Christmas card picture because you weren’t perfectly matching and your dogs/kids weren’t even looking.

Maybe your tree isn’t 9 feet tall and your ornaments aren’t captivating by theme.

Maybe your dining table doesn’t have the China or the most esthetic centerpiece.

“Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load.” Galatians 6:4-5 (NIV)

The Bible warns us that comparison ties a bow on the burden of the unwanted lump of coal that we were never meant to own. Each of us are accountable to our own loads.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2 (NIV)

The Bible encourages us that there is a way that we can shift our bitterness from comparison to set our minds on the fact that we are already blessed.

Maybe this season you don’t have some of those Christmassy things.

But maybe you have a heart filled with warmth of love from the special people in your life.

But maybe you have a roof over your head and to top it off have a Christmas tree.

But maybe you have groceries and people you get to feed when they pull up a seat.

The Christ in Christmas can remind us that life has so much more joy when we renew our minds from bitter to blessed. Let’s wrap up the bitterness in our hearts and toss it out like a lump of coal, and unwrap the beautiful bow to the gift of blessed.
