Aware of our nakedness

The good and gracious God that we serve created us to not have awareness of our nakedness. He’s so good and so kind that He never wanted us to have to even begin to comprehend insecurity. Because of our fallen world, insecurity lives. We are aware of our nakedness, and beyond that, we are aware of all the things we don’t have and think we should have. We compare ourselves to others. We even compare ourselves to a “better” version of ourselves that lives just two steps ahead in our minds. No matter how much we “improve” or work to be better, do better, or have better, we are always two steps behind the vision in our minds. Discouraged by our progress not being enough. We are our own worst critic. Frankly, most of us live in this sin by being a bully to ourselves and we don’t even realize it.

This was never God’s design, but the state of our sinful nature can actually be pretty powerful when partnered with a relationship with God. Think of the waves of glory that can swell and crash in this world for God’s glory when we understand what it is to be insecure and what it is to know God.

James 4:6–7 ESV

“But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

Hmmm. These verses. Wow. Insecurity can make us proud, can’t it? Insecurity can be acted upon by speaking mean thoughts to ourselves and, again, we don’t even realize we are doing it.

Next time a mean thought floats through your head, think about James 4:6–7. God gives GRACE. He gives grace. And even more, He gives MORE grace. Instead of turning insecurity into pride, let’s turn it into humility and dwelling with the Lord. Our humility leads to the devil fleeing. FLEEING. Humility leads to full receipt of grace, which is freedom. Let’s let the world see more of that in us as a result of our time dwelling with God so He can meet us, dust us off, and free us.
