I feel like Martha gets a bad rap on first glance. In the Gospel of Luke, she and her sister Mary graciously open their home to Jesus and his disciples as they are traveling. She is chastised for focusing on preparations and details instead of simply sitting at the feet of Jesus and absorbing His wisdom (Mary’s position). However, there is more to her story that seems important to note. First off, scripture explicitly says that Jesus loves Mary, Marthy, & Lazarus (siblings). That alone seems very significant. Later in John, Martha approaches Jesus seeking comfort for the death of her brother Lazarus. She acknowledges that He has the power to save and expresses her belief He is the Messiah and Savior. She shows no confusion or hesitation.
Martha experiences a profound closeness with Jesus that we will likely not understand on this side of heaven. They were good friends that could communicate with genuine care of one another. What I would give to be in her position!
Her desire to serve perfectly is relatable. We are often made to feel that we should hide our mess before presenting to Jesus, showing up to church, or opening up our homes. This could not be farther from the truth. Jesus wants us to put down the frills and come as we are. What freedom!
Jesus, you are the truest friend that we could ever ask for. You want to hear from us. You want us to come to you regardless of how messy our lives look. Instead of waiting, help us immediately reach for you in our need! We know you will embrace us with open arms because that’s who you are. We love you. Amen.
