This one might be a little bit of a spicy take, but let’s get into it. Hagar lived a life full of hardships from what is recorded. She was Sarah’s (Abraham’s wife) servant and when she became pregnant (by Abraham just to be clear), Sarah threw her out of the house in a jealous rage. The audacity! She’s wandering around the desert with her son when the Lord’s messenger makes an appearance with a word just for her. She is told to endure Sarah’s harsh treatment and that her descendants will increase.
In that transitional moment, Hagar feels seen by God! She gives Him the name “El Roi” which means as much. She may not see immediate relief or rescue from her unfair circumstances, but she is assured that she will be immensely blessed in her growing offspring.
I am currently in a painful work season that I would desperately like to fast forward. My natural instinct is to run away, but I am holding steady. Although I don’t feel that the Lord has released me yet, He has been extremely kind and considerate along the way. During a recent dreamy sunset cruise, I felt Him whispering to my heart that He is near. I can face tomorrow because He is my strength and support.
Jesus, this world is broken and some days it’s hard to keep showing up. When we are tempted to avoid, remind us that you are our solid rock and refuge. You hold it all in your hands, and we can rest easy in your arms. You promise to carry the weight for us and we believe you! Our wonderful counselor and prince of peace. We love you. Amen.
