“Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God’s love for them.” Jonah 2:8, New International Version
When I first read this verse as I sat down to write, all I could think about was the peace that envelops us when we walk in the freedom God gives us. You know, when your body is tense, your mind is racing, your head may even be pulsing with tension, and you whisper to God, “I give all of this to you, trusting you know and love me. Would you grant me your peace?” and we begin to feel all the tension wash away supernaturally. Have you ever experienced that?
From my experience, it’s my nature to cling to worthless idols. To consider all possible outcomes, exhausting my mind in an effort to protect myself. To pursue all the things I think are making me happy instead of resting in the arms of the one true God who fulfills all my desires.
It takes surrender and heavenly perspective to live in the balance of grace and faith. To slow down in the moments my mind begins to run and instead focus my thoughts on our Father and the freedom He handcrafted for me to live in.
Idols aren’t going anywhere on this side of heaven. Let’s remember this today: good intentions alone never land us in freedom. Heavenly perspective is the key to live in God’s grace in faith. I pray we would all be more prone to let our minds and hearts wander to the Father’s feet than we are to live in the world, distracted by everything vying for our hearts. Grace and freedom are ours today in the name of Jesus!
