One of the most beautiful gifts the season of Christmas can unwrap is a desire for generosity. There is a unique joy that is experienced when you give to others as an expressional act of love.
While our spirits may feel moved to generously give, we must also protect our worth from becoming defined by dollar amount.
Generosity isn’t a predestined price-tag amount. It may seem discouraging when your heart is longing to give, but you feel as though the “little” you have to offer will never measure up to what may be received as “enough”.
What could my $5 donation really do? What if my handmade gift isn’t accepted because it’ll be seen as an alternative? What could providing one meal do when so many others need help too?
“‘Truly I tell you,’” he said, ‘this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.’” Luke 21:3-4 (NIV)
The Christ in Christmas reveals to us that the amount we give will be multiplied when it’s rooted in the spirit behind the gift.
If you feel led to give thousands, give thousands. If you feel led to serve and feed the homeless, serve and feed the homeless. If you feel led to give $5, give the $5.
Jesus gifted each of us unique and special resources to carry out our call to generosity. Don’t compare or question how your gift will be received, all that matters is you respond to His call, and Jesus will fulfill the need.
“You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.” 2 Corinthians 9:11-12 (NIV)
